Today I kicked off operation “All the pies”. In common with everyone who became sick during the past
few weeks, it is taking an age for my energy to return to its former level. As a result, most days are
seeming unusually difficult recently. I think part of the problem may be that I haven’t upped my calorie
intake to compensate for the lack of energy. With that in mind I have made the most of Geraldine’s
supermarket to embark on a dedicated regime of trying to become fat. A difficult job when hiking all day,
but one I’ll dutifully dedicate myself to. Day 1 food consumption has included:
Breakfast
2 scones, 1 apple, 1 pear, 1 litre whole milk, 1 cheese wrap
Lunch(es) & snacks
2 cheese wraps, a dozen dried apricots, 2 protein bars, 1 apple
Dinner
Porridge (with raisins, apricots and cranberries), hot chocolate, mixed nuts, slice of cheese
Other than eating, I spent the early morning booking my accommodation for Lake Tekapo, which is a
relief to have sorted. At 10:00, the indefatigable Wayne arrived to ferry us to the far side of the river. A
short day of walking as we didn’t reach the trail until 12:00, but it is another massive relief to have the 2
impassable rivers out of the way. They have worked out nicely all things considered, but caused a lot of
stress and hassle trying to work out what to do and worrying if it would all come together. I am so happy
to get back to the simple joy of just walking without logistical headaches.
