This morning a Northbound walker caught me on one knee taking photos of Lego Ben being chased by
toadstools. Fancy, but she gave me a most peculiar look! How else is one supposed to liven up a forest
walk?

After yesterday’s lethargy, I have felt pleasingly energetic today. Fortunate as every day before
Queenstown looks to follow a similar pattern. A large climb, followed by a large descent and then
repeated a few times. Day 1 and my knees already feel stiff and swollen. Everyone is suffering the same
though. It’s a chorus line of groans when people attempt to stand up after sitting for a while.

Tonight’s hut, and all of the huts on this track, are really modern 12 bunk buildings, and a real step up
from those I have stayed in recently. Interestingly, their construction was funded by the country/pop
singer Shania Twain when she bought the land. Not quite hobnobbing with the stars, but perhaps some
reflected glitter to obscure the worst of the mud.
