In the coming weeks I will return to England and resume a vegetarian diet. For the duration of this trip I
made the decision to eat meat, partly for convenience and partly to allow myself to sample local
specialities, which in NZ are generally not vegetarian. Today has fully justified my moral flexibility.
This morning Ben, Natalie and I made a breakfast pilgrimage to Queenstown’s legendary Fergburger. It
may seem strange having a burger at 9am, but the queue for most of the day extends down the street,
which says something about the reputation of the place. I sampled the classic Fergburger, and can now
say that I have truly lived! In a roundabout way, I have been ruined as an omnivore and can now resume
vegetarianism with equanimity.
Apart from that breakfast bombshell, the key job for today has been to organise the shuttle bus to deliver
us to the next trailhead. In true TA style the route directs you to Queenstown and then drops in the
requirement for a 80km shuttle round lake Wakatipu almost as an afterthought. Annoying, but I have
heard the Greenstone trail is lovely, so am mainly just looking forward to starting it tomorrow.
Queenstown has been great for a rest day, but Bluff awaits…
