The pace of starting a new journey can be jarring. After all the last minute running around to cross items off the jobs list (while typically adding another entry for every one ticked off), everything has suddenly slowed down.

This afternoon I have a long train journey from Bremen to Frankfurt airport, in readiness for my flight in the morning. Nothing now to do except sit back, eat sandwiches (sadly both are already gone), and reflect on the beginning of a new adventure.

My least favourite part of every trip are the goodbyes. Lacking the self-awareness to properly understand why I feel the need to periodically disappear into the wilderness, I lack the words to adequately explain to loved ones why I am leaving again. Perhaps one day…

Maudlin reflections aside, I have been using the train time to plan prospective camp spots and water sources for the first few days. All rather theoretical at this stage as I don’t know what mileage I will be capable of achieving each day, but I like to at least have a rough plan. Also, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C in Washington State at the moment, a swimming lake would make a wonderful addition to any camping spot.

Tomorrow will be a very long day, so I won’t write anything more until Friday and the USA.

Anyway, that’s enough for now. I need to get back to persuading myself that ordering a 2nd beer on the train would be a terrible idea 😁

  1. I understand you entered the US. You take extra care with temperatures that high. Watch out for smoke, it is the fire season there.

Daher so.
