It felt like an age since last being at Steven’s Pass. Considerably less stressful simply hopping off a scheduled bus rather than trying to figure out the best hitching spot and trusting to hope. The days, containing so many new sights and faces, seem long. Far longer than the days of home and work routine where weeks easily blur into one. Not that the comfort, ease, and ability to communicate with loved ones which town provides isn’t seductive. Even after only 2.5 days, I already felt the pull to stay just a little longer and that disappearing into the wilderness again is tiring and uncomfortable. I can very well understand why some people find themselves stuck in towns and then subsequently behind schedule to finish their hike.
For now, I will content myself with looking forward to 5 days’ time when I have hope for a bed, beer, and conversation with home. Also, despite a very uneven camping spot (all the good ones were taken by the time I arrived), I am camped next to a beautiful alpine lake. Rumour has it that Marmots will attempt food heists under cover of darkness, so I am hanging my bear bag as usual. While the bag may be Grizzly bear certified, I’m not entirely sure if it was ever tested against well organised rodent gangs. Hopefully, I am not heading back to the grocery store again tomorrow.
Today’s short walking distance is because my bus didn’t leave Leavenworth until 15:00, so only really commenced walking at 16:00. Later than I would have liked, but it was preferable to hanging out on the street and trying to hitchhike back. This was I could indulge in some last food and touristing, rather than standing in the sun trying to get a ride.

You look cosy in that spot. With luck the rodent raiding party will head for the less well prepared.
It might not be the most even of campsites, but it looks lovely.
Good luck with keeping your food safe.
