To my great satisfaction, I am not now inhabiting the digestive tract of a wolf or wild pig after last night’s bivouac in the woods. I am not too proud to admit that I had collected a small number of throwing rocks in case curious animals needed a prompt to move along, but fortunately has no need for them. Even better, the internet trick of sprinkling cinnamon around the perimeter of your camp does seem to repel ants. Also, tasty for breakfast. Cinnamon that is, unless times are really hard. So, as far as I could see, there were no nocturnal visits, unless they were exceptionally light of trotter or paw.

Wanting to achieve a stealthy departure meant for a 05:30 departure this morning, although this was also done with the intent to get some distance done before the predicted high temperatures arrived. The high of today is a tropical 28-30°C, which is really too much for me when walking uphill with a rucksack. On the subject of today’s schedule, I was off the official route today, so don’t really know distances or meters gained/lost today. All I know is that I started at 05:30 and finished a dehydrated, sweaty mess at around 12:00-12:30. By the way, this re-route has thrown my distance calculations out a bit, so there’s a bit of a jump, but they should settle down again now.

Tomorrow I reach Admont which will mark the end of my journey on the Nordalpenweg. I don’t yet know what to make of that, at least in part because it seems like I only started a few days ago. Something to reflect on during my rest, blog publishing and logistics planning stop tomorrow (Sunday afternoon) and Monday.

  1. The temperatures there have been abnormally high, good idea to start early. You must take the weight penalty and make sure you have water. The wolves won’t like a desiccated corpse to chew on.

  2. ‘exceptionally light of trotter or paw’ – what are you like . . . (good to know though). Interesting about the cinnamon – useful.
It’s a pity you’re having to walk through a heatwave. I’ve my fingers crossed for better weather. I hope your rest day is restful and the planning is easier that last week’s. Take care xx
