I’d forgotten just how quickly sand can become lodged in all manner of nooks, crannies and crevices after
a day at the beach! After 25km along a windy beach my skin feels sandblasted to the softness of a babies
rump, my socks are now 72% glass fibre and I have had a really enjoyable day.
Beach walking seems to be the Marmite of terrain, some love it, some hate it, but everybody has strong
feelings one way or the other. I feel fortunate in that I have enjoyed the vast majority of beach walks on
this trip. Discounting the horror show of yesterday, it feels like our last beach walks were months ago
back in the Northland, which was enough to bring about hours of happy remeniscence for me today. I
have found the beaches some of the most mindlessly relaxing places to let my thoughts and feelings
wander, and today that was just what I needed.
Tonight we spend our last night on trail in the city of Invercargill. Based on what I have seen on my way
in, well, let’s just say that it’s not just excitement which will drive me to get an early start on tomorrow’s
final day.
