I am beginning to think that when Americans say that somewhere is a nice town, the criteria is only that there are a reasonable quantity of footpaths, so you don’t feel as if you’re about to be pancaked by a monster sized Chevy at any moment.

Quite a few people have told me how nice Bend is, but honestly, it just seems like any other mid-sized American town, just with an unusually large number of bars. Cars dominate and there is no recognisable centre, leading to disconnected clusters of life, which are time-consuming to join together using public transport or on foot.

It has been a useful stop to replace my shoes and buy a camp mug, which I regret not bringing, but overall will be relieved to get back to the trail tomorrow. The first part of the journey will be by bus, after which I will need to hitchhike. Hopefully it will be as easy as the journey here.

  1. I think US town planners only had a straight edge to design their towns, and forgot people have legs to walk.

  2. Good to hear you could replace your shoes and your walking days will be more comfortable.
